Romany Rain

Hello, I’m a gypsy, who are you?
They tell me you’re a gypsy too.

They say you can’t stand to stay in one place,
That you can read a whole book on one person’s face
And when times are hard, you play a sad tune
While singing your heart out to a near-empty room.

I’m sure that the stars dance ‘round in your head
And the words that you read were all penned by the dead
Can the wind make you sway to the song that’s inside
While you dream of the day that you’ll finally fly?

Can you, like me, feel the shapes and the colors
That surround and embrace the lifetimes of others?
Or feel in one breath that something is wrong
And anger the ones who dislike the strong

I suppose that you dance in whirls of flame
With wild hair flying that you never could tame
Your skirt wraps around you like so many waves
And captures the eyes of the heart that you crave

You move with the earth not because of your skill
But rather through passion and sheer force of will
Your hands leaving ripples of starlight and pain
For you know all the loss that resulted in gain

If the blood in your veins pulses Romany rain
And the strength in your bones is a constant refrain
Then find me, my friend, for I feel alone
And even a gypsy will still seek a home

So hello, I’m a gypsy, who are you?
They tell me you’re a gypsy too.
